Chinese zodiac: your animal and element from your date of birth

Animal, element and yin or yang according to Lunar New Year. Near the year boundary, the date matters: the Gregorian year alone is not enough.

It stays on your device: your date never goes in the page address, is not stored and is not sent.

What this tradition says about you

Chinese tradition associates each animal with some qualities. When you calculate, we show the line for your animal with its source: this is how traditions tell it, and you decide what resonates. Your full portrait across 8 calendars is in the app.

How to read it

Each lunar year combines one of twelve animals with one of five elements: wood, fire, earth, metal and water. Each element spans two consecutive years, one yang and one yin.

Together they form a sixty-year cycle. The year begins at Lunar New Year, which falls between 21 January and 20 February.

A little history

The cycle of sixty stem-and-branch combinations has been used in China for more than three thousand years to count days and years.

The twelve animals were linked to the branches much later and today accompany Lunar New Year in many Asian countries. Some traditions count the year from Lichun, around 4 February; here we use Lunar New Year.

Questions

Why does my animal differ from other websites?

If you were born in January or February, it depends on the exact day of Lunar New Year that year. Many websites use only the Gregorian year.

Does this predict anything?

No. It shows how a tradition names your year and which qualities it associates with it, with its source. It says nothing about destiny, health, money, love or compatibility.

Is my date stored?

No. It is worked out on your device, never goes in the page address and is not sent.
